Based in Richmond, Virginia, the Department of Health Administration has a strong, 70-year legacy and is a premiere Department geared toward creating the most innovative, compassionate, and business-savvy leaders to reimagine healthcare. With the rapid evolution of healthcare, the Department's curriculum must anticipate the future and provide the proper experiences for the next generation of healthcare leaders.

The Department of Health Administration in the College of Health Professions is seeking a colleague to be Director of Learning Experience and Architecture focused on fully online and hybrid learning opportunities for Health Administration Programs. The Director will work with the Bachelor of Science in Health Services and Health Administration graduate programs as they expand to deliver high-quality online learning environments and curriculum to a diverse learning population. The purpose of this position is also to ensure curriculum continuity and equivalency between in-person and online options and provide leadership in development, implementation, maintenance and assessment of online programming.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

The primary objective of this position is to provide holistic direction and management of Health Administration and BSHS online and hybrid curriculum to both undergraduate and graduate students. The Director will work with the BSHS Program Director, MHS/MSHA Program Director in bridging face to face, hybrid and online curriculum to ensure consistency and equivalency while addressing the unique needs of a diverse learning population. The Director's responsibilities will include course management, teaching, course and curriculum development and support, faculty development in online pedagogy, and collaborating in outcome assessment, performance, and program evaluation.

Course management
  • Coordinate with VCU Online's instructional design team to ensure semester over semester course structure functionality and content accuracy
  • Manage course master templates, including the implementation annual quality improvement cycles
  • Oversee the re-design of courses and develop course group plans to account for course delivery in emerging modalities (ex. 8-week, synchronous online, hyflex)
Instructional excellence
  • Regularly examine program courses holistically through a lens of curriculum and instructional consistency and cohesion
  • Ensure that course design creates an equitable and welcoming environment for all students
  • Oversee the strategic implementation of innovative instructional practices and emerging technologies
  • Ensure that courses meeting institutional, state, and national accessibility requirements
Instructor training and support
  • Provide individualized support to instructors working through the course design process
  • Consult with each instructor prior to the semester on course changes, goals, and questions related to content and instruction
  • Lead training efforts related to changing impacting courses, emerging technologies, and innovative instructional strategies
Assessment and program evaluation
  • Lead continuous course improvement efforts through the actions of stakeholder feedback collection, data reporting to program leadership and faculty, and the development of data-informed action plans
  • Collaborate on the development of program outcomes and assessment plans to meet program evaluation and institutional assessment requirements
Other Duties
  • Create new courses in the BSHS program to support student pathways across programs
  • Represent the program in various university and college committees
  • May supervise one or more individuals in related fields
This position will have the opportunity to teach courses in the BSHS program as an adjunct instructor for supplemental compensation.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in instructional design or curriculum development with completion of a PhD or EdD in education, leadership, or instructional design within the next twelve months
  • Advanced knowledge of learning theories and instructional design frameworks
  • The ability to lead the instructional design and development of courses in multiple modalities including in-person, hybrid, and online
  • Experience teaching in multiple modalities such as in-person, hybrid, and online
  • Demonstrated history of integrating active learning strategies, emerging pedagogical practices, and digital technologies into courses and learning experiences
  • Experience utilizing content authoring (ex. Articulate 360/Storyline, Adobe Captivate, iSpring, Lectora) and LMS authoring tools (ex. Design Plus)
  • Knowledge of item writing, assessment development, and assessment strategies
  • At least three years' experience utilizing learning management systems (Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, etc.) for the management of courses, deployment of course templates, and collection of reporting data
  • Experience implementing program-level curriculum and instructional initiatives
  • Demonstrated project management experience including the creation of development frameworks, timelines, and quality assurance review tools as well as the use of management tools (ex. Smartsheets, Asana, Trello)
  • The ability to develop and lead training sessions and workshops centered on teaching, course design, and related topics
  • The ability to work collaboratively with instructors, instructional designers, and SMEs through the course design and development process
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding of institutional, state, and regional accreditation and compliance policies
  • Experience with qualitative data analysis and visualization to inform programs and practices
  • Development of quality improvement plans tied to student learning outcomes
  • Supervisory experience
  • Leadership training
Salary Range: $85,000+ (commensurate with experience)
