Job Summary
The Weller Laboratory is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated postdoctoral researcher interested in studying viral-mediated mechanisms in chronic autoimmune disease. Current NIH-funded projects include the 1) Role of Hepatitis Delta Virus in Sjogren's syndrome and 2) Role of Salivary Gland localized SARS-CoV-2 infection in Oral Tolerance and Immunity.
The Weller Lab studies the impact of chronic pathogen exposure on oral health and specifically dysfunction of the salivary glands. Viruses, including Hepatitis Delta Virus and SARS-CoV-2, have been detected human salivary gland tissue and can impact salivary gland function. Persistent presence of these pathogens within the salivary gland tissue may contribute to disruption in cellular homeostasis and impact development and/or maintenance of virus-specific immunity. Our aim is to define the mechanisms of viral-mediated salivary gland dysfunction, how these viruses are able to evade immune-mediated clearance to persist in salivary gland tissue and identify viable therapeutic approaches.
The successful postdoctoral fellow will work to characterize salivary gland localized viral infections with the primary goal of transitioning lab-based findings to the clinical setting. The position will involve utilizing in vitro and in vivo models to support mechanistic studies, RNA-Seq, bioinformatic analyses, working collaboratively as part of the research team, and assisting in training and mentoring of laboratory staff, undergraduate and graduate students.
As a member of the School of Dentistry team you are expected to form positive and productive relationships with peers, students and leadership to support the mission, vision, values, and PROMISE standards of the organization. You are expected to encourage and foster a supportive, anti-racist, equitable, and inclusive environment for our patients, students, faculty, staff, and the communities we serve.
Qualifications:
Position requires a Ph.D. (or close to completion), expertise in molecular biology, microbiology, bioinformatics, and/or a related field. Mouse handling is required. Knowledge of in vitro and in vivo models, next generation sequencing, and confocal microscopy are preferred.
Responsibilities
Preferences
Candidate should have strong communication skills (both verbal and written), be able to work collaboratively and contribute to advancement of current research in the Weller Lab.
