Public Safety Reporter - Rapid City Journal

The Rapid City Journal, South Dakota's largest newspaper, is looking for a full-time public safety reporter eager to break news as well as deliver important watchdog journalism to our readers.

Covering the beat requires the ability to quickly file breaking news stories while juggling long-term investigative, enterprise and crime and court stories. We want a candidate who can ask tough questions, investigate trends and find fresh angles to pursue.

We have a vibrant and hardworking newsroom, which makes it a great environment for a new reporter to develop their skills and grow as a reporter and writer. We work hard and have fun.

A bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field is required. We will consider strong recent graduates with reporting experience. Social media and video experience is a plus.

Why Rapid City?

Rapid City is a scenic destination in the heart of America. Western South Dakota includes the Black Hills National Forest, Crazy Horse Memorial, Mount Rushmore, Badlands National Park, Wind Cave National Park, countless lakes, streams and outdoor recreation opportunities and the largest ski resort this side of the Rockies.

The Black Hills also holds claim to historic Deadwood, a relic of the Wild West and home to some of the best gaming resorts in the region. The nearby wide-open spaces reflect that same Western flair as well. We have mild winters, gorgeous summers and great people.
