The Free-Lance-Star is seeking an enterprising reporter to cover education in the rapidly growing area of Fredericksburg, Va.
The local school systems are dealing with student population increases that are outpacing classroom capacity, the challenge of paying competitive teacher wages amid a spike in cost of living, securing schools, balancing parents' rights concerns with broader education philosophies, and implementing new state policies.
The avenues to explore are numerous.
We're looking for a reporter who is as comfortable attending contentious school board meetings and protests as they are poring over reports, FOIA materials and budgets.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated superior news judgment and reporting skills with the ability to write clearly and concisely. Must be willing to shoot and edit photos and video using a smartphone.
