ALBANY BUREAU CHIEF

What happens in the state capitol - from closed-door dealmaking to the inner workings of state agencies - affects the everyday lives of Western New Yorkers.

The Buffalo News seeks an experienced enterprise beat reporter to cover this franchise topic, to serve as a watchdog over elected officials and bureaucrats; to chronicle how tax dollars are being spent - and in some cases, misspent; to track changes in state policy that have real-world consequences; and, most importantly, to uncover information vital to understanding life in New York that state officials would rather never see the light of day.

Our newsroom is focused on relentless enterprise - original reporting that you won't find anywhere else. The Buffalo News is an award-winning news organization with a history of breaking the area's big stories and investing in journalism. We strive to hire talented and dedicated people who reflect the diversity of the communities we serve.

This beat relies on deep reporting, good sources and public documents to generate ideas, not institutional meetings and news releases. The ability to use open records laws to build compelling stories is a must. Data skills and experience are a plus. Must have a proven ability to break news, turn around in-depth and quick-hit stories on tight deadlines and juggle the demands of reaching a digital audience. Candidates should have clips that show a knack for explaining why it all matters and providing the bigger context.
